The Manawatu Turbos today farewell one of their all-time greats Michael Fitzgerald. A stalwart of Turbos Rugby ‘Fitzy’ will set his sights on Europe at the conclusion his Super Rugby Season with the Chiefs.

Rising from the ranks of Heartland Rugby to be selected in the Manawatu Turbos in 2006 FitzGerald had his breakout season in 2011 when he helped the Turbos to the Championship Final. Former Turbos Head Coach Dave Rennie was quick to recruit 115Kg lock into the 2012 Chiefs squad where he made his debut vs. the Highlanders.

A complete player FitzGerald has always added mass, skill, speed and work ethic to the Turbos completing his locking duties to a highly competitive level both on attack and defence. Fitzgerald’s skill set was an integral part of the Turbos 2014 Championship season.

“You always noticed when Fitzy was on the field, his performance last year in the round robin win over Hawke’s Bay epitomized what he brought to the team, he was dominant in all areas and carried a huge work load for the whole game,” Turbos Head Coach Jason O’Halloran said.

“He will certainly be a loss to the team and the province” CEO John Knowles reflected,

“But it is great to see another example of a player that can truly springboard from provincial rugby and we wish him all the very best with the next stage in his rugby career and hopefully look forward to seeing him back here one day.”
