Manawatu Turbos Call in Toby Morland

The Manawatu Turbos have called halfback Toby Morland as injury cover for Kayne Hammington who sustained bruising to hi ribs at the recent training camp.

Hammington took a knee to the ribs from a fellow teammate in a contact session. As a result, former Blues and Highlanders globe-trotter Morland will take his place in the squad on a week-by-week contract until Hammington has recovered.

The 32 year-old is a little taller and heavier than Hammington at 175cm and 85kg, but brings a similar skill-set as a nippy runner and sharp passer. It's likely he will back-up Jamie Booth, at least to start the season.

Turbos head coach Jason O’Halloran spoke of Morlands experience as being a good asset to bring into the team as cover; “Toby has certainly experienced plenty of professional environments and played at a high level for some time, it is ideal to be able to bring someone in of his calibre as opposed to someone fresh to the competition especially at such short notice to the start of the season.”

Morland has plenty of experience, playing for numerous professional teams and for more than ten years. His career started with Otago in 2002, and during his time down south he made his Super Rugby debut for the Highlanders.

He had one season with the Chiefs in 2009, before heading to Ireland where he played for Munster. Stints with Auckland and the Blues followed, before he headed back overseas, this time to Japan to represent Krasny Yar Krasnoyarsk. He has amassed over 100 games for those various teams.

More recently Morland has been living in the Manawatu, working as a personal trainer at the business he and his partner started in Palmerston North called Studio Rubix and playing for locla club Te Kawau. The Turbos therefore know Morland will be in good shape for the season ahead.
