The Manawatū Turbos have released prop Tietie Tuimauga from his contract for the remainder of the Bunnings Warehouse NPC.
The 28-year-old Samoan international has signed a deal with Irish side Connacht.
Varsity prop Flynn Yates, who was initially called into the side as injury cover for Ropate Rinakama, will remain with the team as cover.
Turbos coach Peter Russell said they were disappointed to see Tuimauga go, but that it was the right decision for the player.
“With the uncertainty of the NPC finishing dates for 2021, it is important to understand each player’s individual needs and personal requirements,” he said.
Tuimauga debuted for Manawatū in 2020 on the back of a strong club season for Feilding Yellows.
Earlier this year he played the first of his two tests for Samoa, starting alongside current Turbos hooker Ray Niuia and former Turbos prop Michael Alaalatoa.
He played the first two games of this season for Manawatū at tighthead prop, adding to the nine games he played for the province in 2020.
Manawatū Rugby Union chief executive Andrea Jackson said it had been great to see how far he had progressed during his two years in the province.
“Tietie’s development on and off the field has been impressive,” she said. "We are proud to provide platforms to our players to showcase their talents that lead to other oprunities overseas or within super clubs.”
The Manawatū Rugby Union wishes Tuimauga all the best for his playing future.
