Tasman claim win over Turbos
The Manawatu Turbos stuck in the fight for 80 minutes but fell to the Tasman Mako 29-19 at Central Energy Trust Arena on Wednesday night. Tasman came out of the match with a bonus point thanks to two tries in each half. Despite some good impact off the bench from Otere Black and Jackson Hemopo and a strong showing from starting first five-eighth Sam Malcolm, the Turbos could not pull off a final comeback.
The Turbos lost fullback Junior Laloifi to a head knock early in the match. Tasman wing James Spowart scored the opening try when he glided through a hole in the Turbos defence from 40m out. But the Turbos did not leave their fans waiting long for a try of their own.
Antonio Kiri Kiri made a break down the right wing, offloaded to James Tofa who pulled off a basketball-like offload back in field to Sam Malcolm, who scored his first try for the Turbos. Tasman pulled further ahead through midfielder Levi Aumua. But the Turbos would have the final say of the match.
Michael Alaalatoa scored a try on the stroke of halftime to bring the Turbos within two points at the half. Tasman scored some crucial points early in the second half through replacements Will Jordan and Mitchell Hunt. The Turbos were being punished by a constant stream of penalties.
Eventually captain Antonio Kiri Kiri was yellow carded for a high tackle. But while he was off the field, Michael Tagicakibau bagged a try after threatening for much of the much. With the clock ticking down, Hunt kicked a penalty to deny Manawatu a bonus point late.
