Northland cruised to a 49-19 win over the Manawatu Turbos in Whangarei on Friday night. Missed tackles proved costly for the Turbos as Norland racked up the tries in the first half. But it was the Turbos who started the game looking on song.
The Turbos held the lion’s share of possession in the opening minutes and they cashed in when Rob Thompson and Lifeimi Mafi combined to set up James Tofa for a try. But from there, they were starved of ball. Northland opened their account through a Jake Debreczeni penalty to make it 5-3 after 10 minutes.
After more possession, Matt Matich charged over from back of a scrum for a try. Hooker Jordan Olsen crossed not long after to give Northland a handy lead. Jordan Hyland scored Northland’s third in the 23rd minute. When Jake Debreczeni scored in the 36th minute, Manawatu were in serious trouble. But Junior Laloifi pulled one back for Manawatu just before halftime before Scott Gregory landed a big blow right on halftime to give Northland a 34-12 lead.
In the 46th minute, Northland pulled further ahead when Kara Pryor was awarded a try despite there looking to be a clear knock on in the lead up. Sione Asi was yellow carded in the 68th minute after repeated penalties near the tryline. Aside from some nice touches from Jamie Booth, it was all one-way traffic for the remainder of the half with Blake Hohaia bagging a try. New flanker Adrian Wyrill scored on fulltime for Manawatu from a rolling maul to close out the match.
