Manawatu Turbos Charity Jersey Game 2015

The children of MidCentral DHB’s child development service joined up with the Turbos to help design their unique jersey for the ‘charity jersey game’ in September.

The kids were split into several groups, and equipped with green marker pens and an outline of the jersey. Some tackled the sleeves while others took on the front and back, all of them working hard to draw out their favourite designs. There was variety too, with objects ranging from flowers through to jet aircraft, all finding their way onto the shirt.

The children weren’t on their own either, with several members of the Turbos squad, including captain Callum Gibbins, all joining in on the action. It was an opportunity that was enjoyed by the children, who got to meet some of their sporting heroes, get their signatures, and talk to them about their creative designs.

The finished product will now be taken away, and the design will be scanned into a computer, allowing for it to be printed onto the match jersey. The jersey will then be worn against Canterbury on September 3, at FMG Stadium. A one-off print run of the jerseys will also be available for purchase, with the proceeds going toward the purchase of an electric buggy for the child development service.

MDHB’s Portfolio Manager Children, Youth & Intersectoral Partnerships Barb Bradnock was on hand at the design workshop.

She said: “It’s great to see the Turbos getting in amongst the children, the kids were so excited to see their heroes, and have the chance to just talk to them as they drew. Having a team like the Turbos that gets in and supports our services, our community, and our children, is absolutely fantastic.”

Turbos Captain Callum Gibbins said it was pretty special designing the jersey with the kids;

“It is very humbling, the kids are awesome and came up with some pretty out there ideas! The jersey always means a lot to the lads and to play in one that we designed with the kids it will help makes it even more special.”

This will be the third ‘charity jersey game’ with last year’s game benefiting Palmerston North Hospital’s neonatal unit, and 2013’s going toward new televisions for the children’s ward.
