Alaalatoa, Ah Wong and Stewart sign on for 2020

Samoan international Michael Alaalatoa is returning to the Manawatū Turbos for the 2020 Mitre 10 Cup season.

The Crusaders prop, 28, was among three players the union confirmed had been signed on Wednesday along with former Brumbies midfielder Nigel Ah Wong and Taranaki prop Kyle Stewart.

Turbos coach Peter Russell said the trio will supplement their existing squad well.

“I’m excited about the prospect of working with Mike, Kyle and Nigel as we welcome them into the Manawatu Turbos for the 2020 campaign,” he said.

“Mike and Nigel will bring that Super rugby and international experience that we require going into this highly anticipated Mitre 10 Cup season. Kyle also brings a raw and exciting possibility in the front row after a full season with Taranaki.”

Alaalatoa made his Mitre 10 debut for Manawatu in 2015.

With his focus on the Rugby World Cup in 2019, he was unavailable last season, but did play one game for Canterbury.

The tighthead prop, who has had regular starting minutes at the Crusaders and has racked up more than 80 Super Rugby matches, confirmed his return to the provincial side that gave him his first crack at provincial rugby after he arrived from Australia in 2015.

He has played four seasons for the Turbos, notching 36 games in the green and white jersey.

Ah Wong, 30, is a powerful ball carrier who can slot in on the wing or in the midfield.

He spent three seasons with the Brumbies racking up 24 Super Rugby games and scoring six tries.

He has also had stints in Japan with the Coca Cola Red Sparks, Suntory Sungoliath and the Kintetsu Liners.

Last year he played for the New South Wales Eagles in Australia’s NRC.

Stewart, 22, is a strong scrummager who has been one of the top performers in Taranaki club rugby.

He made his provincial debut against Manawatū in 2018.

He played 15 games for Taranaki including featuring in every match for the side in 2019.
