Player Contracting on Track
With the team’s return to top flight rugby for 2015, the Turbos coaching staff look to make the final tweaks to their squad and fill key gaps.
With many players re-signed after the Turbos 2014 championship winning season in the ITM Cup there are but a few positions still in need of attention. The Turbos management are still aiming to fill the three key positions of first-five, prop and lock along with a few others to be able to execute their style of open rugby complimented by set piece accuracy and gritty defence.
The positions these have only come about due to former first five Jade Te Rure leaving to chase his international dream with Scotland and former lock Mike FitzGerald heading to Europe after Super Rugby. The Turbos are in need of a prop due to Ma’afu Fia sustaining a season ending injury playing for the Highlanders in Super Rugby.
Despite this both Head Coach Jason O’Halloran says that he and Assistant Coach Jeremy Cotter have a really good idea where the positions will be filled from and are both confident in the ability of the squad to adapt to loss of some very good talent in Te Rure, FitzGerald and Fia;
“We are really happy with how things are progressing so far. We are confident that the culture and attitude of the team will be able to adapt well to new personnel in the side. Likewise we believe players coming into the team will quickly pick up on our values and start embracing them.”
CEO John Knowles outlined that the last of the contracting should be completed soon;
“We can expect the final batch of signings to take place over the next month. We have been impressed with some of the local players who are showing their worth through the club rugby competition and can expect a number of them to be signed to the Turbos.”
With the season nearly less than eight weeks away everyone in the region will have one eye closely on Club Rugby to see who is putting their hand up to wear the Green and White Jersey.
Who do you think should be signed into the remaining three positions?
