Huge showing for Cyclones at this week’s Black Ferns camp.
Heading into a World Cup year, selectors are looking to assemble a squad fit for the challenge of wrestling the title back off holders England. Silica Winiata, Kristina Sue, Sarah Goss, Nicole Dickens, Crystal Mayes, Rhiarna Ferris, Janna Vaughan and Rebekah Cordero-Tefuga, are all hoping to be part of the picture come August.
Asked why there was such a dominant presence of Manawatu players, Cyclones coach Fusi Feaunati was quick to outline the following:
“It’s partly a spinoff of having guys like Wesley Clarke (now assistant coach of the Black Ferns) with us three or four years ago. We’re now really seeing the fruits of that player development. Having a really strong sevens set up also helps”.
Thursday will be a day of training sessions, with the subsequent trial on the Friday. Saturday will see the team announced and the non-selected women return home.
All the best to our women involved!
