Manawatu Claim Regional Title

The two time Nationals Champions and 2015 National Runner Ups came from behind in the final game of the day to beat Wellington 24-17.

Wellington proved the toughest opponent for the girls in green over the weekend with Manawatu handing heavy defeats to Taranaki, Poverty Bay and Wairarapa Bush in the lead up to the playoffs. Manawatu squared off against Wellington earlier in pool play coming away with a narrow 14-12 win.

The Tournament marked an important step for the squad who did not have the luxury of key playmakers Sarah Goss and Selica Winiata as well as a string of injuries to other players throughout;

“It is always going to be tough without players like Selica and Gossy, but the girls played with good intensity. The leadership from our captain Krystal Mayes played a big part and the other members of the squad certainly stepped up to the occasion.”

The top two seeds played off in the final where Manawatu once again had the better of Wellington to claim yet another central region title and qualify for nationals in the process. The big upset of the day came courtesy of Wairarapa Bush who downed Taranaki in their third and fourth spot playoff to claim the last remaining spot for Nationals.
